Als een favoriete auteur een nieuw boek uitbrengt dan is dat altijd feest. Als dat het geval is voor drie van je favoriete auteurs dan is dat… een heel groot feest?
In 2024 brengen Sally Rooney, Ali Smith en Olivia Laing elk een nieuw boek uit. Op dat van Laing is het niet lang meer wachten, maar voor die van Rooney en Smith moeten we even geduld hebben tot het najaar. Een mens zou bijna willen dat het al herfst is, met de nadruk op bijna, want geef mij eerst maar wat zonnige zomermaanden.

De eenzame stad van Olivia Laing heeft voor een groot stuk bepaald waarnaar ik zoek in non-fictie. Het persoonlijke aan het algemene en het studieonderwerp van je boek verbinden: ik heb nog niemand ontdekt die het zo moeiteloos doet als Laing. Hoewel ik nog wat ongelezen boeken van haar in de kast heb staan, kijk ik toch al uit naar haar nieuwste boek dat begin mei verschijnt.
In 2020, Olivia Laing began to restore a walled garden in Suffolk, an overgrown Eden of unusual plants. The work drew her into an exhilarating investigation of paradise and its long association with gardens. Moving between real and imagined gardens, from Milton’s Paradise Lost to John Clare’s enclosure elegies, from a wartime sanctuary in Italy to a grotesque aristocratic pleasure ground funded by slavery, Laing interrogates the sometimes shocking cost of making paradise on earth.
But the story of the garden doesn’t always enact larger patterns of privilege and exclusion. It’s also a place of rebel outposts and communal dreams. From the improbable queer utopia conjured by Derek Jarman on the beach at Dungeness to the fertile vision of a common Eden propagated by William Morris, new modes of living can and have been attempted amidst the flower beds, experiments that could prove vital in the coming era of climate change.
The result is a beautiful and exacting account of the abundant pleasures and possibilities of gardens: not as a place to hide from the world but as a site of encounter and discovery, bee-loud and pollen-laden.

Al zou Sally Rooney een boodschappenlijst publiceren, dan nog zou ik het meteen willen lezen. Wat me meteen opvalt bij haar nieuwe roman is dat er voor het eerst geen koppel centraal staat, maar twee broers. Ik ben heel benieuwd hoe ze met die relatie zal omgaan, omdat familie in haar vorige romans slechts een plekje op de achtergrond kreeg. Al laat ik dan even de relatie tussen Connell en zijn mama uit Normal People buiten beschouwing.

Het eerste boek van een nieuwe duologie waarvan de verhalen ook apart te lezen zijn. Het seizoenskwartet/-kwintet was voor mij niet helemaal een voltreffer. Vooral het vierde en het vijfde deel lieten mij erg op mijn honger zitten. Ik hoop dat Smith wat meer tijd heeft kunnen nemen en dat het weer als vanouds liefde op pagina 25 is tussen ons.
